SEPTIC TANK PETITIONS
9 July 1999
Member for Lismore, Thomas George is calling on residents of the North Coast
concerned with the new septic tank legislation, that came into effect on 1 July
1999, to sign a petition which I will table to NSW Parliament.
I have been contacted by a number of constituents opposed to the new Local
Government (Approvals) Amendment (Sewerage Management) Regulation 1998, which is
causing conflict for local councils who have the dilemma of implementing the
unworkable regulations.
These regulations are causing confusion due to the varying differences in
registration and inspection costs which are levied by local councils within the
electorate.
Previously, the Coalition was successful in delaying the implementation of the
new regulations for 12 months.
In response to the overwhelming concerns, I have now made available a petition
which I would like to present to the House, the strong opposition to the new
septic tank legislation. This petition asks the Legislative Assembly to:
- Acknowledge that independent scientific analysis has revealed the guidelines
attached to this legislation are flawed and are causing confusion and anger for
councils and ratepayers,
- Withdraw current legislation for a total review and
- Produce focussed, workable legislation which does not require registration or
fees.
When completed, I will table this petition at Parliament in September. Anyone
wishing to sign, obtain copies or further information please contact my office
on 6621 3624.
