Workplace Fatalities Bill
Further to my concerns regarding the OH&S Amendment (Workplace Deaths) Bill
the Minister has now released a new consultation draft which is available from
my office or the WorkCover website; www.workcover.nsw.gov.au.
Despite the Government making a number of amendments to the legislation, there
is still no trial by jury and the Minister can still allow a union to prosecute
an employer. It is important to emphasise that this legislation does not just
catch employers, it catches anyone who in authority in a workplace. This means
it can apply to foremen, site supervisors and team leaders.
The Liberal/Nationals Coalition will seek to amend the legislation in the
Parliament.
Mr Brogden said the Coalition is aware of the views expressed by some business
organisations but the interest of business and all employees are best served by
maintaining fundamental rights such as trial by jury.
Please be aware that comments closed on Friday 20 May 2005, however I have
expressed concerns to the Minister.
2005/06 Budget
I will be closely scrutinising this year's State Budget, which was handed
down on Tuesday 24 May. I have been collating information concerning projects in
the Electorate that should require additional or new funding. I will be
particularly looking for the Carr Government's support for funds to commence the
police station for Lismore, funding/support for the Cardiac Cath Lab in Lismore,
additional road funding; projects such as the Legume to Woodenbong Road,
Summerland Way & Bruxner Highway, increased and additional funding for schools
to assist with minor and major works, financial assistance for country halls and
showgrounds, recognition of much needed funding increases for preschools,
increase in funding for dental health services. Let's hope the Carr Government
will acknowledge and provide assistance to these projects. I would also like to
see a decrease in payroll tax, which is well and truly overdue, to assist
businesses, in particular those close to and competing with those in Queensland.
