Nursing Scholarships

Nursing Scholarships
The NSW Department of Health has advised that applications for 2002 Rural
and Remote Undergraduate Nursing Scholarships have opened. This news is
appropriate especially following the recent industrial action that highlighted
the need for, and shortages of nurses in our hospitals. The scholarships are
offers of up to $4,000 to first year undergraduate nursing students with a rural
background, who meet certain eligibility criteria. A copy of the guidelines and
application forms are available from my office upon request or from
www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing/scholar.htm.
2001 Community Economic Development Conference
Lismore will be hosting the State Economic Conference that will be held from
9 to 11 September at the Lismore Workers Club. A number of field trips are
planned to demonstrate local products and services. This is a remarkable
opportunity for Lismore and surrounding communities, particularly following the
recent success of the Northern Rivers Herb Festival, to showcase the varied and
numerous economic prospects in this area. Networks are forged and contracts are
made at these conventions. With the recent recognition of Lismore as one of the
most likely places in regional Australia to prosper, investment in this region
could not look better. A program is available from our office.
Herb Festival
Last week the final festival activities in Heritage Park concluded a very
successful inaugural Northern Rivers Herb Festival. The atmosphere and patrons
of the Park events was very indicative of the area and promoted the wonderful
opportunities of the herb industries. Congratulations to Louise Barry, event
participants, supporters and sponsors and I look forward to this festival
becoming a regular attraction supporting the herb industry.
ATLAS Expression of Interest
Expressions of interest are being sought from agencies to become eligible to
provide Adult Training, Learning and Support (ATLAS) programs and services to
young people and school leavers with disabilities. Closing date is 2pm Monday 24
September 2001 and interested organisations can request an information package
by telephoning 1800 880 027 or by contacting my office.
Federation by Rail
A special project "Celebrating Federation by Rail 2001" was to run heritage
hand-pumping trolleys across the Nation to celebrate the role of railways in the
history of Australia. Unfortunately rail authorities, including our own NSW
Rail, suddenly demanded a series of personal indemnities from the organisers.
These obviously could not be provided and the event has been cancelled. This
comes as a major disappointment for many rail heritage buffs.
Roll Over Protection Structure Rebate
As part of a rural safety campaign for regional NSW, the State Government is
providing a $200 rebate to assist owners of tractors used on farms who fit a
Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS) during the campaign. An application form
needs to be completed with additional information. This Scheme will conclude on
31 December 2001 and I encourage all farmers to consider and participate in this
opportunity.
